Defence company BAE Systems has selected Union Industries for a contract that will help enable a major investment programme at its submarine facility in Barrow, Lancashire, UK.

Leeds-based Union Industries designs, manufactures, installs and maintains its own range of heavy duty Industrial Curtains. It has now installed a temporary Static Screen with high level infills at BAE Systems Submarines to prevent dust contamination interrupting the defence giant’s manufacturing processes while it undertakes an extensive refurbishment programme in one of its units.

Union’s large 85m wide x 22.5m high segregation screen required a specially designed mounting system, fixings and tensioning devices to suit the existing roof structure to withstand high internal pressure loadings.

The Static Screen is constructed from a superior grade heavyweight PVC coated Polyester and incorporates two emergency escape doors to ensure BAE Systems’ health and safety standards are maintained.

BAE Systems is a global defence, aerospace and security company employing around 88,200 people worldwide. Its wide-ranging products and services cover air, land and naval forces, as well as advanced electronics, security, information technology, and support services.

Andrew Lane, Managing Director at Union Industries said: “Working with such a prestigious British company has been an excellent experience and also speaks volumes for the quality of our market leading Industrial Curtains.

“Our bespoke curtain has been made to a very unique specification that meets BAE Systems’ needs – we recognise that there isn’t a one size fits all approach and we specialise in creating bespoke Fabric Solutions for businesses, no matter how big or small they are. It was great to get the opportunity to support BAE Systems’ investment and it is encouraging to see the company supporting smaller UK manufacturers.”
