When Denholm Transport, one of the largest privately owned UK hauliers, looked to expand its trailer fleet with the addition of some bespoke ‘coil liner’ trailers, they turned to TIP Trailer Services, for the supply of two new coil liner trailers to add to the Denholm fleet.

Built by trailer manufacturer Krone in Germany, these bespoke 13.6 metre trailers can carry conventional forest products or pallets in the same way as a standard tautliner. However, they also incorporate a seven metre long well that can be covered by removable floor sections and allows the safe and efficient transport of steel coil.

John Lucy, Denholm Transport’s UK distribution manage explained, “With the recent increase in both general distribution and steel traffic through the Port of Liverpool, we decided to expand our trailer fleet with the addition of some multi-purpose, state-of-the-art trailers that can cope with both traditional port products, such as steel coils, and carry normal palletised fast moving consumer goods or timber products.”

“The new trailers from TIP give us complete flexibility of operation. They can be loaded with steel coil on the outward journey and return with general freight, or vice versa. This enables us to offer our customers an improved service. At the same time, it gives us greater efficiency in developing the steel and general cargo business, by using a central transport planning platform as part of our port centric logistics,”
added John Lucy.

The Krone coil liner trailers have full European type approval and are fully compliant with industry regulations for the safe transport of steel coils. They also feature the Krone sliding roof, which allows steel coils up to 2.1 metres in diameter to be lowered into position within the body of the trailer.

Both of the new coil liner trailers supplied by TIP Trailer Services are operating out of Denholm Transport’s Liverpool depot. They have been acquired on a five-year deal with TIP that includes full maintenance through the nearby TIP branch in Simonswood on Merseyside.

The trailers went into service with Denholm Transport in early 2015 and are expected to cover in excess of 100,000 miles in each year of their five-year working life.

“From the earliest stage of the procurement, we worked closely with TIP to develop this bespoke specification. Now that the trailers are in service, we are extremely pleased with their performance. The coil loading facility is working exactly as we expected and gives us the full flexibility that was anticipated. We will be adding further trailers to our UK fleet throughout 2015,”
commented John Lucy.
