Brompton Bicycle – the designer and manufacturer of the iconic folding bike – is set to open a new manufacturing and distribution hub at SEGRO’s Greenford Park, in Park Royal, West London.

At just over 86,000 sq. ft. the unit will be transformed into a manufacturing and distribution hub where highly skilled craftspeople will continue to manufacture the bikes and accessories.

The lease is for 15 years and will enable the company to meet its ambitious expansion plans and to meet the increasingly international customer demand.

Brompton Bicycle will fit out the unit with advanced technology – including rapid prototyping using 3D printers through to precision CAM machinery – which will be used to create and design the iconic bikes.

The new facility is located close to the A40 and M40, with direct access to the heart of
London – home to Brompton’s flagship store – as well as easy access to Heathrow from which the company can reach its 44 export markets.

In addition to the one in London, there are another eight international Brompton Bicycle flagships stores – including Chengdu in China which is now served directly from Heathrow.

Alan Holland, Business Unit Director for Greater London, SEGRO, said:

“Brompton Bicycle is one of the greats of Great British design and will be a fantastic addition to our world-class business cluster at Park Royal. Greenford Park’s prime location and close proximity to the centre of London and Heathrow make it an ideal location to support the firm’s international expansion plans.

“Park Royal is already home to large-scale manufacturers forming part of the rich mix of customers who are using SEGRO units to design, develop and distribute some of the UK’s most innovative products.”

Since the first Brompton was designed in 1975, the unique folding bike has steadily grown in popularity and now sells in 44 countries around the world and will hit circa 50,000 bike sales this year.

The Brompton Bicycle is made for cities, with its compact fold, speed and robustness. As the urban population continues to rise and space becomes tighter, the bikes provide convenient and environmentally clean modes of travelling around busy cities.

Sales have also been boosted by the increasing number of cycling commuters in UK cities. According to stats produced by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) in 2014, the number in London increased by 144% from 2004 until 2014, with Brighton, Bristol, Manchester, Newcastle and Sheffield all reporting an increase of 80% or more.

Will Butler-Adams OBE, Chief Executive Officer, Brompton Bicycle Ltd, said:

“After a lengthy search, we are delighted to be moving into the new factory in Greenford. We are committed to London; Brompton was born from a need of city living, our staff are Londoners and the city continues to inform how the Brompton develops.

“The move represents our ambition, passion and long-term commitment to improving the way that people live in and circumvent our cities, on a global scale. It also represents our desire to continue to innovate, both our product and the production process, to ensure lasting quality and value to our customers.”
