Logistics BusinessTOC 2015 visitors learn how Hyster solutions lower port costs

“We have further enhanced our product offering to support ports and terminals by helping to reduce the cost of operation,” says Chris van de Werdt, Commercial Manager Big Trucks, NACCO Materials Handling BV. “Hyster remains the only full line supplier providing a complete range of lift trucks and associated solutions to transfer goods from ship to store in port centric operations, from reachstackers and container handling trucks to lift trucks.”

Stage IV / Tier 4 final Big Trucks

To meet the Stage IV / Tier 4 final (T4f) emissions legislation, the latest Hyster® ReachStacker features the new Cummins QSL9 engine and other technologies. It is proven to offer significant fuel savings in real life applications.

“More than 25 percent fuel savings, which could be more than 4 litres per hour, can be achieved with the new Hyster ReachStacker when compared to our Stage IIIA 2010 trucks and many of our competitor models,”
confirms Chris van de Werdt. “Our goal was to continue our profitable low emissions strategy reducing the total cost of operations and ownership while meeting the new standards for a cleaner environment.”

The latest Hyster® H18-23XM-12EC empty container handlers also help operations reduce their fuel bill significantly, without loss of performance. Hyster has proven data from many applications.

Featuring the latest Cummins QSB 6.7 engine and a 5 speed ZF transmission, the 5th gear acts like an overdrive and lowers engine RPM by 30 percent whilst keeping the same drive speed. The powerful empty container handlers also have load sensing hydraulics, which allows a high lifting speed at low RPM.

The Hyster H16-18 series of forklift trucks is also now compliant with Stage IV / Tier 4 final (T4f) regulations, featuring the new Cummins QSB6.7 Stage IV diesel engine. Due to its robustness and reliability, this forklift truck series is ideally suited to handling bulk in ports.

Checker device for empty container inspections

In cooperation with depot operator Hamburg Container Service GmbH (HCS), the Hyster Special Engineering Department (SPED) in Nijmegen, the Netherlands, has developed the Checker Device for empty container handlers. This innovative solution supports companies by significantly simplifying the inspection of containers and therefore helping to reduce costs.

With the Hyster Checker Device, containers can be firmly locked in place at a height of 1.9 metres. This allows the checker to inspect the containers thoroughly for damage from all sides. The advantage of this is that the container no longer needs to be set down for inspection, cutting out a stage from the procedure and saving time, which significantly increases operation efficiency.

Forklift Trucks

The full range of Hyster materials handling equipment, including lower capacity forklift trucks, plays a key role in many port centric operations.

As well as Hyster ReachStackers, the container packing station, Packing Center Hamburg (PCH) currently uses Hyster® H2.5 FT Advance series diesel forklift trucks, Hyster® J2.5 XN Advance+ electric lift trucks and a Hyster® R1.6 reach truck.

To reduce operating costs for the trucks and protect the goods against soiling, the materials handling equipment is carefully adapted to its use at PCH. For example, the Duramatch® transmission featured on the Hyster® Fortens H2.5FT Advance+ trucks, prevents wheelspin when accelerating and loading or unloading. This significantly reduces friction, which quickly saves a set of tyres, which costs around 1,500 Euros. To save money and energy, the trucks also switch off automatically if they are not used for a two minute period.

Like all Hyster products, excellent serviceability is delivered thanks to easily accessible and intelligently designed components. There is a display showing diagnostic service codes, helping to minimise downtime during routine maintenance. Reliable operation of the truck is enabled by the CANbus Communications system, which is used to manage the electronic systems.

Hyster product managers and specialists will be on stand D10 at TOC Europe to advise ports and terminals operations looking to enhance efficiency and reduce the overall cost of operation.
