GreenCarrier strengthens its Baltic presence with the acquisition of Spedair
The Gothenburg-headquartered logistics specialist GreenCarrier International has strengthened its position in Eastern Europe and the Baltic region with the acquisition of Spedair, an independent Latvian transportation and freight forwarding company, for an undisclosed sum.

Spedair was established in 1998 and is based in Riga, Latvia. The company has subsidiaries in Kiev, Ukraine, and Minsk, Belarus, and has a worldwide network of agents.

Wärtsilä chooses CEVA Logistics to run its global spare parts transportation services
Today Wärtsilä, a market leader in diesel and natural gas engines, biopower solutions and complete propulsion systems and CEVA Logistics, one of the leading supply chain companies in the world, signed a cooperation agreement for the 24/7 global spare parts transportation management and “control tower” activities for Wärtsilä Services. The contract value is approximately EUR 32 million per annum over the next three years. The agreement follows Wärtsilä´s earlier announcement of its intention to centralize spare parts logistics and to build a Central Distribution Center facility in the Netherlands. The new operating model is planned to be fully implemented by 2011.

When Franklin Silencers Ltd – who design, manufacture and supply a range of industrial silencers as well as associated fabrication work – decided to upgrade the materials handling equipment at their Northamptonshire factory, the company invested in used forklift trucks from Jungheinrich’s Ready to Go collection.

Frithjof Schäfer appointed new CFO of Schenker Deutschland AG
Effective September 1, 2008, Frithjof Schäfer (48) has been appointed member of the Management Board of Schenker Deutschland AG. With his appointment as Chief Financial Officer (CFO) he is responsible for the company’s financial activities of the German subsidiary as well as in the Europe Central Region. Schäfer succeeds Hugo Ruhmann, who will leave the company on August 31st.

DB Schenker enters into joint venture in Dubai
DB Schenker is further expanding its presence in the United Arab Emirates. In its latest move, DB Schenker in Dubai founded a joint venture with the owners of BAX Global LLC, which will start doing business as Schenker LLC as of September 1, 2008.

Kalmar invests in its South American sales and service network
Kalmar Industries, part of Cargotec Corporation, has made an agreement to acquire Equipos y Servicios para Terminales y Puertos SRL (ESTP) – its dealer representative in Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay. The move will not only strengthen Kalmar’s distribution network but reinforce its strong service ethos of being closer to customers enabling it to offer a superior level of support.

The parties have agreed not to disclose the transaction value. ESTP currently employs 17 people, most of whom are service engineers. ESTP’s founder and Managing Director, Marcelo H. Massa, will continue with the business.

U.S. Senators call for antitrust investigation into proposed UPS-DHL deal
WASHINGTON—A tentative agreement between DHL and UPS is hitting some bumps in the road due to possible antitrust issues raised by two United States senators.

Under the terms of the deal announced in May, DHL Express would work with UPS on a 10-year, $10 billion contract for airlift capacity in an effort to reduce its ground infrastructure operations costs. UPS would provide all airlift services for DHL Express U.S. Domestic and international shipments from airport to airport within North America, giving DHL a single airline partner in the U.S.

International cable manufacturer Draka UK Limited is in the process of renewing its in-house transport fleet with Volvo FE rigids.

According to Transport Manager Keith May, the ability of Volvo’s transport information system, Dynafleet, to produce environmental reports was a key factor in the decision to stay with Volvo. ”We’re using the Dynafleet reports to keep track of vehicle emissions as well as monitor fuel efficiency and track drivers’ hours relative to Working Time Directive requirements,” says Keith. ”We make daily deliveries to cable wholesalers in Central London and as all the new Volvo’s are Euro 5 compliant, there is no cost to enter the LEZ.”

The new Polish container terminal operator DCT Gdansk is seeing a steady rise in throughput and as it becomes busier, so its handling rates are improving. A new record has been set while working Containerships’ 907 TEU Aila. Both ship-to-shore (STS) cranes recorded an average net productivity of 40.5 moves per hour and the vessel’s overall productivity was 75 moves per hour. Productivity soars as DCT Gdansk throughput increases
The new Polish container terminal operator DCT Gdansk is seeing a steady rise in throughput, now averaging around 10,000TEU per month, and as it becomes busier, so its workforce is gaining valuable experience. Handling rates are reflecting this with a new record being set recently at the terminal.

AFI-Uplift Wrap Up Tank Contract
These two AFI-Uplift scissor lifts have helped to carry out one of the UK’s biggest ever shrink wrapping jobs – involving two storage tanks each measuring 60m x 15m.

The AFI 9250 diesel scissors were hired by PK Marine Freight Services to shrink wrap the two tanks in a special waterproof membrane for long term storage at Ellesmere Port Dock before they are shipped to an overseas customer.
