Logistics Business“Incentivise Innovation to Boost Decarbonisation”, Policy Makers Told

The decarbonisation of the logistics sector is crucial to the move towards a low-carbon economy. Innovation is already key and will further increase efficiency in the logistics sector and unlock sustainable growth. That is why the 8th European Logistics Summit organised by the Alliance for European Logistics (AEL) gathered professionals of the sector and policy makers to discuss how to best enable the decarbonisation in logistics across Europe.


“Logistics is the backbone of the European economy and we must ensure that it remains competitive as well as sustainable. By working hand in hand, the logistics industry and policy makers can achieve vital progress by creating incentives to lower emissions,” said AEL President Mathieu Grosch.

Following the European Commission’s Communication on low emission mobility and the ratification of the COP21 Paris Agreement, the AEL wants to emphasise the contribution of the logistics industry to this framework. During the Summit, industry representatives from Deutsche Post DHL Group, SAP and Michelin Global Solutions discussed the latest examples of technological progress in their companies.

Equally, EU Transport Commissioner Violeta Bulc emphasised that the Commission is working on “on a strategy to speed up the development for cooperative vehicles that should be on the table by the end of the year”. She also stressed that logistics is one of the key sectors that contribute to growth and believes that decarbonisation is a business opportunity since it improves green efficiency and brings jobs opportunity to the European citizens.

The AEL is an industry coalition representing the entire supply chain from manufacturers to retailers by bringing together companies that both provide and organise their own logistics services in Europe. The Association works closely with European institutions and stakeholders to raise awareness of the role that logistics can play in supporting the EU achieve its policy goals for 2020 and beyond.
