Construction of one of the largest distribution hubs ever seen in the UK has begun near Bristol, commercial property developer Stoford and national retailer The Range announced today.

The 1.2 million sq ft mega-shed, located at a 55-acre site between Avonmouth and the Second Severn Crossing, will bring 1000 jobs to the region and inject millions of pounds into the local economy.

The Range is one of the fastest growing retailers in the UK with over 120 stores and many more planned for 2016. The distribution centre will support the store growth and increase in multi-channel operations. It will be one of the most high tech warehouses in the country and will comprise an investment of over £100 million by Plymouth based billionaire owner and founder of The Range, Chris Dawson.

Chris Dawson, said: “I’m delighted to see that work has commenced on our new distribution centre in Bristol. These are exciting times for The Range and the building of the distribution centre is a big step in the expansion plans that I have for the business – it’s non-stop for us.

“Along with over 1,000 new jobs at the site this building will deliver long-term service contracts for local suppliers and inject millions of pounds into the Bristol economy every year whilst supporting local firms during the construction.”

Chris continued: “When the warehouse is up and fully operational it will act as training hub for smaller distribution centres around the country. We will also offer tours to schools, colleges and universities as I am keen to give the future industry leaders a chance to see how a big UK operation works.”

Birmingham based Stoford has been appointed as development partner tasked with delivering the £90 million regional distribution hub. McLaren Construction has been appointed to build the unit.

The scheme is the largest Stoford has ever delivered and is set to complete early 2017.

Dan Gallagher, joint managing director of Stoford Developments, said: “The Range’s new distribution hub is an exciting project and a major part of the 3.4 million sq ft that we are building over the next 12 months across the UK.

“Central Park, Bristol is an excellent location, with first class infrastructure including the nearby motorway, on site direct rail freight service and adjacent sea connections. We are delighted to be delivering this facility for a highly respected occupier.
