An official authority that supports Belgium´s Port of Antwerp has certified the new Hyster® Empty Container Handler series as approved equipment for double reefer container handling.

Using the Hyster® Empty Container Handler with a capacity of up to 11-tonnes, demanding operations within the Port of Antwerp will have the opportunity to benefit from the significant productivity advantages of double container handling.

“This highly rugged and durable equipment enables the operator to handle two containers at once, even 40ft reefer containers with both refrigerator units positioned at the same side which would normally cause an offset load,” says Chris van de Werdt, Product Strategy Manager – Big Trucks for Hyster Europe. “By handling two containers at once, efficiency can be improved and the cost per container move can also be reduced, providing cost savings”

“We have developed the Hyster Empty Container to handle loads up to 11-tonnes so double handling is even possible for empty reefers with wet floors, which can exceed a tare weight of 5-tonnes,” continues Chris.

The reinforced spreaders feature CANbus controls and there is a choice of several different container engagement systems, for fast double container handling. The mast has also been designed to accommodate heavier weights and offset loading, for optimal performance and durability, with innovative features to lower stresses and increase service life.

“The Port of Antwerp is one of the busiest in Europe so we are pleased to receive this recognition for our innovative Empty Container Handler,” says Chris.

For power and speed in every lift, the empty container handler features a reliable and efficient Cummins Stage IV QSB 6.7 engine and various performance modes to suit the particular needs of the operation. To help offer low running costs, the truck is also equipped with an on-demand, load-sensing, hydraulic system that only draws engine power when required.

The truck features an optional cabin that tilts back 10° at higher lifts to make looking up easier, and a 1m raised cabin option for visibility when the container is at driving height.

Another available option is a 3-stage tilt back mast capable of lifting up to 18.8m, but with a closed height of just 5.4m – half the standard mast height (10.8m). This specially engineered solution enables the mast to be titled 57.7 degrees to provide flexibility and enables the Hyster® Empty Container Handler to be driven in restricted height areas, such as under bridges or low hanging areas commonly found in inland terminals.

This particular model was showcased as part of the Hyster® Rhine Tour in June and July 2018, which saw a range of Hyster® solutions transported on a barge along the River Rhine for events at terminals in the Netherlands, France, Switzerland and Germany.

At these events, Hyster® solutions, and offerings from key partners and suppliers, were showcased to demonstrate ways that common challenges in ports and terminals can be overcome, and how efficiency can be optimised when handling varied loads.
