MetaPack, eCommerce delivery technology specialist, is urging eCommerce retailers and brands to act quickly to implement a single click checkout facility for their customers, as the patent on Amazon 1-Click expires on September 12.

The one-click process is proven to achieve rapid conversions because it uses stored customer payment and delivery information to offer virtually frictionless checkout processes.

Amazon took out the patent twenty years ago, recognising the myriad benefits to speeding up and simplifying the final stage in the customer’s online experience. However, with the patent about to expire, retailers and brands are at liberty to use this process.

“Amazon has protected the patent, which has been worth billions, and has granted a licence to just one company, Apple, during that period. Even though it was a US patent, it effectively had worldwide influence,” said Duncan Licence (pictured), VP for Global Solutions at MetaPack. “Now it is available for retailers and brands to implement on their own eCommerce sites, and will help reduce basket abandonment.”
