Base logistics
The logistics facilities include closed
and open storage, warehousing,
laydown areas and hardstanding,
cranes, forklifts, lorries, flatbed
trailers, tugs, barges and earth moving
equipment, with 34 permanent staff.
Tony Bennett is the base manager for
projects and ship repairs for LiLe – the
logistics solution provider. His role is
to design specific logistics solutions
for customers and manage
the berthing crew. He has
expertise in rig construction
and sub-sea installations.
“The quay is key here. We
offer drilling support, ship
repair, a fully-functioning
shipyard, piping area and
steel importation.”

with 4 areas for
separate storage. Another
ship berthed during
my visit was Geoquip’s
‘Investigator’, which
undertakes core sampling
activity in deep water on
the sea bed approximately
80km offshore, before
the pipelines are laid. LiLe
operate heavy lifting here
for the Aje oil field, repairing
and storing equipment.
Anchors and chains for
FPSOs are prepared here
and towed to the field.
Last word goes to Chris
van Niekerk, LADOL’s
Chief Operating Officer
and base manager, who
has been here since 2011
having been at nearby
Port Harcourt prior to that.
“We don’t accept work that
requires long-term quay
occupation, as we receive
vessels for the ongoing
construction. We will handle
the pipework for Africoat,
moving it to their new
yard for coating and then
shipping to the oil fields.
So we’ll need trucks and
trailers on site, which we currently sub-
contract but soon we’ll buy our own.
We’re anticipating demand. There are
many requests for business so we must
develop quickly, whoever the new
clients are. We’ll need more storage
space. Prime location on the quayside
is for high-value, long-term clients.”
A remarkable development, LADOL
have got all their ducks lined-up and
are all set to fulfil the objectives. It
could be that, if Nigeria becomes an
economic tiger, this large opportunity
itself will be insufficient to cater for the
multi-nationals piling in to the country.
In the meantime, a new industrial
city will rise in the harbour area as a
demonstrative symbol of economic
success.
