A remarkable year for the Port of Sohar
All over the world the year of 2009 will be remembered as the year of the financial crisis.
Many ports around the world were affected by the recession. In spite of this, The Port of
Sohar is announcing today on January 17, an increase of the overall throughput during 2009.
Overall the cargo throughput increased with 39% of freight tones from 6, 9 million tones in
2008 to 9, 7 million tones in 2009.
The increase in liquid bulk and dry bulk as well as containers contributed to this growth.
Oman International Container terminal showed a 200% growth in containers; from 30.000 to
almost 100.000 TEU.
Another important factor is the start-up of SIUCI export. Sohar Aluminium reached their
designed levels and this also had a positive affect on the annual throughput.
Even though it is very difficult to predict what is going to happen financially in the world, the
management of the Port of Sohar can see the further industrial development of the port with
companies like Vale and the new jetty, the ongoing growth of Freezone Sohar with great
positivity. SIPC also expect a continuous growth in number of vessels and freight tones as
well as containers.
