New rail connection from DIT in Duisburg to Rotterdam
Duisburg, April 16, 2009: as of this week the Duisburg Intermodal Terminal, DIT, now has an additional direct rail connection with the ECT terminals in Rotterdam. The Dutch rail operator DistriRail B.V. has transferred its container delivery service from Duisburg DeCeTe to DIT. The decisive factors for DistriRail were DIT’s better hinterland connections and the possibility of stepping-up the frequency of trains at DIT. Contargo, the majority owner of DIT, welcomes this decision by DistriRail MD Sander de Roo. DIT’s Managing Director Bernd Putens comments: “Both partners profit from the cooperation. We are able to plan our hinterland transports more flexibly, and DistriRail benefits from our good connections with shippers.”
DistriRail has been operating between Rotterdam – Duisburg since 2006 and has just increased its frequency to 11 round trips per week. The train, with a capacity of 86 TEU, can complete the journey from ECT to DIT and back in just under eight hours. DIT, with its six sidings each 700 metres long, already has numerous direct rail connections with almost all the seaports in the Hamburg – Le Havre range and with many terminals in the European hinterland. DistriRail and Contargo have been working together for almost one year now and the changeover to DIT is a good opportunity to intensify this cooperation.
Shippers know they can rely on the advantages of direct rail connections: consistent departure and arrival times, freedom from behind-the-wheel times and limited working hours – and freedom from traffic jams. At DIT, which was one of the first inland terminals to be certified for compliance with ISPS regulations, customers also appreciate the excellent cargo security of container transports via rail, and the low risk of losses through criminal activities.
