More power from less fuel.
Newengine range from Volvo Trucks

Volvo Trucks is introducing a new range of engines and transmissions that give up to three per cent lower fuel consumption, 40 per cent lower carbon dioxide emissions and higher power outputs.Volvo Trucks is introducing a new range of engines and transmissions that give up to three per cent lower fuel consumption, 40 per cent lower carbon dioxide emissions and higher power outputs.

“Reduced fuel consumption is high on the list of our customers’ priorities,” says Staffan Jufors, President and CEO of Volvo Trucks. “With our new engines and transmissions, we are reinforcing our already leading position in the field of fuel efficiency.”

At the start of the year, Volvo Trucks launched the world’s most powerful truck, a Volvo FH16 with power outputs of 540 hp, 600 hp and 700 hp. Now it is time to introduce some of the market’s most fuel-efficient trucks too. This time the focus is on the models that account for the vast majority of Volvo Trucks’ sales, the Volvo FM and Volvo FH with 11- and 13-litre engines. Volvo’s 7-litre engine, which powers the Volvo FE and Volvo FL, is also being launched in a new version.

3 per cent lower fuel consumption
Owing to a range of technical changes that optimise combustion allied to a further development of the Volvo I-Shift automated gearchanging system, Volvo has succeeded in considerably lowering fuel consumption. For trucks with the 13-litre engine in combination with Volvo I-Shift, fuel consumption has been reduced by up to three per cent compared with the previous Euro 5 incentive version. For the 11-litre engine, the corresponding reduction is one to two per cent. Seen over a 20-year perspective, fuel consumption and climate-impacting carbon dioxide emissions from a typical Volvo truck have been cut by 20 per cent.

“These are concrete improvements that increase customer profitability,” says Staffan Jufors. “A fuel consumption saving of a few percent saves huge amounts of money, particularly in long-haul operations where it is not unusual to cover more than 200,000 kilometres a year.”

Higher power output and torque
At the same time as the trucks have become more fuel-efficient, they have also become more powerful. Power output from the 13-litre engine has risen to 540 hp and torque peaks at 2600 Nm, an increase of 100 Nm over the previous 13-litre engine. The Volvo D11 is available with power outputs of up to 450 hp and torque of 2150 Nm. The Volvo D7 is available with up to 340 hp and 1300 Nm (on the FE) or 290hp and 1070 Nm (on the FL).

The cleanest engines ever
The new engines are also the cleanest ever and meet the new Euro 5 emission requirements that come into force in October 2009. Compared with the previous Euro 4 requirements, oxides of nitrogen emissions have dropped by 40 per cent. The Volvo D13 engine is also available in a variant tailored for the Enhanced Environmentally-friendly Vehicle (EEV) norm, with the Volvo D11 engine to follow shortly. This is a voluntary framework of regulations with even lower emissions of soot and particulates that can be applied by local authorities to speed up the introduction of less environmentally impacting vehicles.
