Liebherr Mobile Harbour Cranes to boost Belgium’s cargo handling

Even at this early stage, 2012 turns out to be one of the most successful years ever regarding Liebherr Mobile Harbour Crane deliveries to terminals in Belgium. Within the next months, four ultramodern LHMs will be delivered to the Kingdom, tying the record of 2010. Remarkable is the diversity of the cranes supplied, with each being a different type. This is testament to the high market acceptance of Liebherr’s well-balanced mobile harbour crane range, comprising six sophisticated LHM models dedicated to all cargo handling requirements.

Euroports’ LHM 280 represents the first delivery to Belgium this year. In May, the crane started operation at Euroports Terminals on the Right Bank in Antwerp, well-known for storage and handling of sugar. Main tasks of the LHM 280 include bulk handling, primarily sugar. Additionally, Liebherr’s latest model, a LHM 420, is going to start operation in Antwerp this summer. Situated on the Euroports Left Bank Terminal this crane will be a true all-rounder as fields of application include not only general cargo and handling of forest products, but also bulk commodities and container handling. The LHM 420 was launched in 2011 and is the successor of the LHM 400, which is Liebherr’s most successful model so far, accounting for 250 deliveries worldwide. In Belgium, more than one third of all LHMs ever delivered are type LHM 400.

Also in May, a LHM 550 was supplied to Nova & Hesse-Noord Natie Stevedoring in Antwerp. The crane provides an economical solution for handling coils, slabs and all kind of steel. Thanks to a maximum lifting capacity of 144 tons and a radius of 54 meters, the LHM 550 is able to handle vessels up to Post-panamax size.

In Ghent, Stukwerkers Havenbedrijf is expecting a new LHM 600, which is the strongest mobile harbour crane available in the market. This crane is configured to handle paper reels, timber fertilizers and steel products. The crane will also benefit from Cycoptronic® system ensuring accurate and sway-free load motion, which results in increased productivity and safety.

Belgium has been an important market for Liebherr Mobile Harbour Cranes for more than 20 years. In 1990, the first mobile harbour crane was delivered to Westerlund Corporation in Antwerp. Due to a notable market growth in recent years, Liebherr is optimistic that the demand for state-of-the-art mobile harbour cranes will further increase in Belgium.
